Online colleges vs. traditional school

If you are an adult looking to finish (or begin) a college degree, you may have some hesitation about attending a more traditional, ‘brick and mortar’ school. If so, online colleges may be right for you!

There are many reasons why an adult learner may not want to attend a traditional school:

Time- between work and family, finding the time in an already busy schedule to attend classes almost seems like an impossibility.  That extra time spent commuting to and from class takes away from your family time, gym time,  or personal time- this is the major reason that adults find online colleges so appealing.

Money- Schools that are classroom based tend to cost much more than online colleges.

Social Factors- if you are not the same age as a ‘traditional’ student, you could find sitting in a classroom with people in their late teens and very early twenties uncomfortable. You are not able to relate to them and they are not able to relate you as you are at different life stages. This feeling of being the odd man out is enough to discourage many adult learners from pursuing classroom learning.

Online colleges remove the barriers that non-traditional students would otherwise face in a classroom. As far as time is concerned, you are able to learn and study at your own pace, without the pressure of commuting to and from a school. Regarding money, online colleges are much more cost efficient than traditional ones.  And socially, any discomfort you may feel from being the only ‘adult’ in a class full of ‘kids’ is removed- you are learning in the privacy of your own home and, more often than not, your virtual classroom will be filled with adult learners such as yourself. Class message boards and forums will give you the tools to interact with your professor and other students that you can relate too.

If you are interested in furthering your education, you should strongly consider online colleges!
